Twisted & Stitched

Contemporary Mixed Media Filigree collection

A limited four-piece collection created by jewellery designers duo Boryana Chaneva and Silvia Galova to feature at Milano Jewelry Week 2022 combines the art of filigree together with traditional hand crafts.

Influenced by shapes found in textile craft work, the collection plays with popular techniques often present in folkloristic decorative ornaments such as jewellery and embroidery. The aim of the two designers was to feature traditional techniques, whilst making these appealing to a contemporary audience.

The concept behind the pieces here presented is to showcase the versatility of the filigree technique, as well as its place in contemporary and art jewellery.

Using different materials and techniques, this was done here by combining contemporary designs of silver filigree with textile art jewellery.

INVERTED ARCHITECTURE _ neckpiece

This piece features a textile, hand embroidered collar, with a gold-plated silver filigree ornament of an inverted house, filled with larger than average traditional filigree filling. Geometric shapes play a role in making traditional crafts such as embroidery and filigree a contemporary piece of art jewellery.

PURPLE-SPARK _ neckpiece

The ‘Purple-Spark’ necklace features an explosion of colour which is hand stitched using metallic thread embroidery onto linen textile, in combination with a hand-knit crochet band. This joyously bright piece partnered with a geometric shaped filigree ornament, includes fine filled filigree details which add texture and structure to this delicate yet pointy silver number.

INVERTED GEOMETRY _ brooch

A 3D brooch piece, using fine traditional filigree fillings creating intricate geometrical shapes which positioned inversely create a play of see-through symmetrical precision which gives the brooch and its traditional technique a contemporary glow.

GOLD ENSEMBLE _ neckpiece

Inspired by folk costume, at closer inspection this piece is composed of geometric shapes filled with various filigree shades, and textile ribbon. As a folk ensemble of dance and music performers, this piece plays with movement and mimics folk-like costume, with a contemporary twist. An easy to wear piece of jewellery which carries itself with an air of old and new.
